Born in Dublin, Ireland, on July 26, 1856, George Bernard Shaw was the only son and third and youngest child of George Carr and Lucinda Elizabeth Gurly Shaw. Fernald began his career as a journalist and actor, and later became a stage manager and director. After serving in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve during World War II, Fernald, became a director of several theater groups and wrote several articles and books including "The Play Produced," "Destroyer from America," and "Sense of Direction."
